Materials, Messages and Meanings #11 Sustainability

Three irish artists have been selected from an open call as part of our Materials, Messages and Meaning series. Now in its eleventh year, these exhibitions explore artists’ different approaches to materials, methods of production and messages within their work.

This year we have selected artists who have responded to the theme 'Sustainability.

Jasper McKinney MBE is an established practising artist based in Ireland and France making paintings, drawings and sculpture. McKinney studied at Brighton College of Art and Slade School of Fine Art, London, awarded an MBE in the 2013. He shows artwork internationally which reflects his experiences and imagination, along with his excitement and optimism for life.

Judith Waring is a visual artist working primarily in 3 dimensions and with the 'sculptural'. Concerned with materiality, process and scale her practice considers visual markers of time, of place and particularly of boundaries. The work is often site-specific and informed by imagined narratives. JW has shown work both nationally and internationally. Born in Belfast, JW currently lives and works in Denmark and N. Ireland; she is an External Lecturer at the University of Southern Denmark.

Mollie Mia Murphy is a Fine Art Media student from Dublin. A recurring theme in her work is the environmental impact Irish people have on our island. Her research on forestry takes in different factors such as settlement, colonisation and changes in culture and language.

Adornment (Re-Use + Re-Imagine)

The ACJSNI Re-Use + Re-Imagine Adornment Project is a collaborative venture between 10 artist / makers related to the linen heritage of R-Space Gallery. The project highlights the distinct characteristics of 3-Dimensional research in Silversmith, Jewellery and Textile Art practices. The three craft areas see frequent overlaps in scale, materials, and methods of construction which, when combined, create potential for dynamic statements that push beyond traditional boundaries.

The artists present work that has explored a cross-over of sensitivities and developed their specialisms to create unexpected synergies and directions. The documented processes will be displayed with the finished pieces in the exhibition.

Places, Spaces and Traces

Cas Holmes is an award winning artist based in Kent. She graduated in Fine Arts from University College of Creative Arts, followed by research into paper-making and textiles in Japan. Renowned for her use of 'the found', she is the author of five books for Batsford, including her most recent ‘Embroidering the Everyday’ (2021) and ‘Textile Landscape:Painting with Cloth in Mixed Media’ (2018). Her work takes an eclectic view on how different places, everyday subjects and the landscape we live in, can inform your textile work

Places, Spaces, Traces reflects on her Romani heritage. She is interested in the commonalities we have as people, the need for a place of our own, family and food. With migration, changes in our working lives and increasing opportunities to travel, our certainty about who we are and where we fit in is unsure.
