Materials, Messages & Meaning #4    2015

R-Space Gallery invites submissions from Northern Ireland artists in response to the theme: “Nothing is ever as it seems”

“The world is seldom what it seems; to man, who dimly sees, realities appear as dreams, and dreams realities”. Samuel Johnston

Materials Messages & Meaning 2015 will be our fourth group exhibition exploring artists’ and makers’ different approaches to the materials they choose to work with and why; the messages they wish to convey using those materials; what those messages are and the methods of production and process they use to make the work.

Material is a broad term for the (chemical) substance, or a mixture of substances that constitute a thing, this could also include other artforms, spoken or written word.

A message is a discrete unit of communication intended by the source for consumption by some recipient or group of recipients. A message may be delivered by various means, including courier, telegraphy, carrier pigeon and electronic bus.

In linguistics, meaning is what the source or sender expresses, communicates, or conveys in their message to the observer or receiver, and what the receiver infers from the current context.

Exhibition Dates 17th October – 13th November 2015

‘Is She Blew’ exhibition by artist, curator and DJ David Littler (sampler-culture clash)

Back for one day only – Saturday 12 September 11am to 5pm

“At half past five the horn will blow, Six o’clock we all must go, And if you be a minute late. Robert McCabe will shut the gate.’

‘Is She blew’ refers to the twice-daily ritual of the mill horn being blown to mark the start and the end of the working day. The recording of the mill horn played in David’s exhibition is from Hilden Mill, famous for its Barbour’s Threads. The whole exhibition is a sonic and visual foray into the sound of linen.

A specially commissioned performance is scheduled for Saturday 12 September at 7.30pm. Joining artist David Littler for the evening are video artists Paul Moore and Jiann Hughes, together with musicians Jason Singh and Maurice Leyden. Booking essential for the evening performance.
