Patterns of the Sea – Arashi Shibori dyeing with Indigo

Tuesday 4th August, 10 am – 5 pm 


Create stunning patterned and textured textiles with a variety of natural fabrics and the beautiful magical Indigo dye; evoking the Windswept Irish seas and shorelines. Working with Welsh textile artist Catherine Lewis you will make sample pieces that could be used as be scarves, accessories, hangings or tableware.

Materials will be provided but students will need to bring gloves, apron/old shirt, plastic bags, pegs; they can also bring their own natural fibre garments or fabrics to dye.

£40 + £5 for materials


Textures of the Coast in Nuno Felt

Wednesday 5th August, 10am to 5pm

Experiment with a variety of fabrics and wool to create textural surfaces inspired by the Irish coastline with Welsh textile and jewellery designer maker, Mandy Nash.  You will make sample pieces that can be used as wall hangings or table mats; they can also be embellished later with hand or machine embroidery.

Materials will be provided but students will need to bring a couple of old towels, bubble wrap (two sheets approximately 50 by 50cm) and a small plastic bowl.

£40 + £5 for materials


Flora Patterns on Linen

Thursday 6th August, 10 am – 5 pm

detail scarfInspired by nature you will create a beautiful flora landscape with natural dyes on linen fabric, using the flora from the beautiful surroundings/coastline of this workshop at Landsend studio. This workshop, in collaboration with Welsh textile artist, Claire Cawte, is suitable for all.

Taking a stroll and foraging for seaweed, gorse, leaves, berries, petals and lichen, you will be ready to create extraordinary patterns.  Please bring apron, gloves, secateurs, scissors, string, small sewing kit, rusty items (found objects, nails, small tools).

£40 + £5 for materials


Sea Shell Stitchery

Friday 7th August, 10 am – 5 pm

Ammonites49505Taking shells or other found objects from the beach as inspiration, students will learn how to interpret line, texture and form with needles and thread, with Textile Artist Susan Smith. Classic hand embroidery stitches will be taught, using a variety of contemporary threads.

Materials will be supplied but students should bring a notepad and pencil together with a basic sewing kit including scissors, pins and needles as well as any particular threads, beads, etc. that they may wish to work with.  Suitable for all levels.
