3 to 30 September 2016

R-Space Gallery invites proposals for a group exhibition entitled Form Function & Food presented in response to Northern Ireland’s Year of Food and Drink 2016. The theme for the month of September is Bread and Baking, so we particularly encourage submissions relevant to that subject area.

The exhibition will include both functional and conceptual works. Makers are sought who use diverse materials, have a specific message to convey and use distinct production methods. Both emerging and established artists/makers are invited to apply from any location.

The exhibition will be accompanied by an artists’ supper with the aim of encouraging critical discussion around craft production in Northern Ireland. Subject to approval of our current funding application, we will have a budget for transport and a modest participation fee.

Open Call – Materials Messages Meaning #4 2015

August 19, 2015

Materials, Messages & Meaning #4    2015

R-Space Gallery invites submissions from Northern Ireland artists in response to the theme: “Nothing is ever as it seems”

“The world is seldom what it seems; to man, who dimly sees, realities appear as dreams, and dreams realities”. Samuel Johnston

Materials Messages & Meaning 2015 will be our fourth group exhibition exploring artists’ and makers’ different approaches to the materials they choose to work with and why; the messages they wish to convey using those materials; what those messages are and the methods of production and process they use to make the work.

Material is a broad term for the (chemical) substance, or a mixture of substances that constitute a thing, this could also include other artforms, spoken or written word.

A message is a discrete unit of communication intended by the source for consumption by some recipient or group of recipients. A message may be delivered by various means, including courier, telegraphy, carrier pigeon and electronic bus.

In linguistics, meaning is what the source or sender expresses, communicates, or conveys in their message to the observer or receiver, and what the receiver infers from the current context.

Deadline for submissions – September 18th 2015
Exhibition Dates 17th October – 13th November 2015
Five selected artists will receive a fee for a talk and exhibiting work.
Worked to be delivered to gallery by October 13th 2015

Please send your proposal, artist statement and CV (no longer than one side of A4 each), along with up to 5 images of your work to Include dimensions and details of media used.
